Do you know a practicing surgical technologist who was on-the-job trained (OJT) and wants to become a CST? Great news, effective August 1, 2013, an OJT surgical technologist regardless of when he/she trained, can qualify for admission to an approved Accelerated Alternate Delivery (AAD) pathway program which leads to CST exam eligibility upon completion. That’s right! Check out the revised ARC/STA Accelerated Alternate Delivery (AAD) Pathway Policy announcement. Continue reading →

2013 ARC/STSA® Policy Revision

As part of the ARC/STSA Board of Directors ongoing commitment to meeting the needs of all of our communities of interest, a review of policies and procedures impacting ARC/STSA approved Accelerated Alternate Delivery (AAD) Pathway programs was successfully conducted at their Spring 2013 meeting in Asheville, NC, resulting in significant AAD Pathway Policy changes effective August 1, 2013.

Policy Changes

Substantive changes for 2013 have been made to the AAD Pathway Policy expanding the minimum admission eligibility requirements and updating the minimum clinical caseload experience required for AAD pathway applicants:

AAD Admission Eligibility

Any on-the-job trained (OJT) candidate may apply to an ARC/STSA approved AAD pathway program, regardless of when they trained, so long as they meet all other admissions criteria required by the sponsoring institution (school/program)*.

The revised policy eliminates a previous enrollment eligibility limitation which restricted OJT candidates to those who trained prior to March 1, 2000.

* The program remains responsible for verifying the OJT applicants’ training as a surgical technologist.

AAD Minimum Caseload Requirement

All AAD pathway applicants must demonstrate completion of the clinical caseload requirement specified in the current edition of the national AST Core Curriculum for Surgical Technology (CCST6e)** on pages 173-175.

The revised policy aligns the minimum clinical caseload experience requirement with the current edition of the national Core Curriculum for Surgical Technology, 6th Edition (CCST6e) consistent with the clinical experience requirements for the sponsoring institution’s primary program.

** The program remains responsible for documenting an applicant’s clinical experience consistent with the current edition of the Core Curriculum (CCST6e).

AAD Timeline

In August 2000, the ARC/STSA (formerly the ARC-ST) adopted a new policy launching an approval mechanism for CAAHEP accredited surgical technology programs to provide practicing surgical technologists, graduates from non-CAAHEP accredited programs and on-the-job trained surgical technologists, with an accelerated route by which to establish eligibility to sit for the national Certified Surgical Technologist (CST™) examination administered by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA).

Accelerated Alternate Delivery (AAD) pathway programs provided primarily distance education options to current surgical technology practitioners who otherwise would need to attend a traditional program in order to establish eligibility for the NBSTSA’s CST™ examination, which was both cost- and time-prohibitive for the working practitioner.

In 2010, the ARC/STSA updated the Accelerated Alternate Delivery (AAD) Pathway Policy minimum requirements for surgical technology programs in Continuing Accrediation to apply for and be approved to offer the AAD pathway as an enhancement to their already CAAHEP accredited traditional surgical technology program (i.e., primary program).

In 2013, the ARC/STSA Board of Directors, responding to the needs of the practitioner community, revised the eligibility requirements to permit access to an approved AAD pathway program for all OJT working practitioners regardless of when his/her original training occurred.

ARC/STSA Bylaws & CAAHEP Bylaws Revised

The Bylaws for both the ARC/STSA and CAAHEP govern the operations of both organizations separately and undergo periodic review and updating. As a result of the review process, both organizations implemented minor revisions for 2012. Those revisions are intended to improve each organization’s ability to conduct the business of specialized programmatic accreditation.

As part of the ARC/STSA’s ongoing commitment to organizational transparency for all of our communities of interest, the revised Bylaws for both organizations are posted at the links indicated below.

ARC/STSA
Effective January 2012, the ARC/STSA Board of Directors amended the organization’s Bylaws by updating the formatting to more clearly reflect both the titles and content of each bylaw Article and Section, as well as to formalize changes to the titles of the offices of President and Vice-President in order to more properly align those roles with our partner organizations’ role designations (i.e., AST, ACS, NBSTSA, CAAHEP).

CAAHEP
Effective April 2012, the CAAHEP Board of Directors amended the organization’s Bylaws for formatting and substantive changes including restructuring membership categories, the addition of a Practitioner category to the list of Commissioners, permitting meetings by interactive electronic means (e.g., webinar format), the addition of Recent Graduate and Practitioner commissioners to the Board of Directors and changes to the organizational structure by eliminating no longer useful committees.
